Gamma error in picture scaling

Apparently there's a simple, hard to notice error in almost every image processing software. Its effects range from the slightly annoying, if you're just meddling with your holiday photographs, to the more serious, if you forget about it while trying to infer some science from images. That's why I note it here, as the author mentions NASA images as well - where the error was also present, although not necessarily in images used for science.
